Calling all young fossil hunters, dinosaur detectives and future space explorers!
Make sure Saturday 7 November 2026 is in your diary because the Festival of Geology is returning to Burlington House in London, and Rockwatch will be there!
This fantastic FREE family event, organised by the Geologists’ Association, is packed with opportunities to discover the incredible story of our planet, meet real scientists and get hands-on with geology.
And we’ve got a sneak peek at three brilliant speakers joining us this year!
Could there really be Impossible Fossils?
Professor Phil Manning has spent more than 35 years investigating the natural world, including some extraordinary prehistoric discoveries. His talk, Impossible Fossils, promises to fascinate anyone who loves dinosaurs, ancient creatures and the detective work behind palaeontology.
What can Moon rocks tell us?
Professor Katherine Joy studies rocks brought back by the Apollo astronauts and helps NASA prepare for future journeys to the Moon. Her talk, Lunar Science, will take us beyond Earth to discover what scientists are learning about our nearest neighbour. And you’ll even be able to see real Moon rocks at the Festival!
What’s the secret to a planet where life can thrive?
Dr Lucia Pérez-Díaz investigates Earth’s incredible history using clues preserved in rocks. In her talk, The Secret Ingredient for a Habitable Planet, she’ll explore what makes our planet so remarkable.
Lucia is also an author and illustrator who loves making Earth science accessible to children. She’ll be signing copies of her latest books, How the Oceans Work and How the Earth Works, created especially for children aged 7–10.
If you’re a young Rockwatcher who loves discovering how our world works, this is a fantastic chance to meet one of the scientists helping tell Earth’s story!
There’s so much more to look forward to!
Our enthusiastic Master of Ceremonies, The Rock Showman (Steve Cousins), will be back to keep everyone entertained, alongside family workshops, a geology treasure hunt, displays of fossils and minerals, and experts from museums and universities.
And if you fancy another geological adventure, there are field trips planned for Sunday 8 November to explore London’s hidden geology.
