The UK's Nationwide Geology Club for Children

Make a weekend of it: explore London’s hidden geology!

Festival of Geology Walks posterComing to the Festival of Geology on Saturday 7 November? Keep your family’s adventure going with one of three urban geology walks in London on Sunday 8 November 2026.

Geology isn’t just something you find on a beach or halfway up a mountain. London’s buildings, parks and gardens have fascinating stories to tell too! These guided walks are a chance for curious Rockwatchers and their grown-ups to look more closely and discover things they might usually walk straight past.

Stones in the City

With Mike Howgate

Become a building-stone detective! Follow a route from Liverpool Street through the City to Moorgate, discovering decorative stones, unusual textures and a dinosaur footprint at Bank.

Can you spot the candy-striped building at Number One Poultry? What might “cauliflower stone” look like? Bring a hand lens or magnifying glass to take a closer look.

The Urban Geology of Battersea

With Ruth Siddall and Diana Clements

Head to Battersea Park to investigate rocks with a surprising secret: some were made by people!

Discover how the park’s landscape was created, explore the stones used in its memorials and find out about an old wall built from ships’ ballast. Those stones have travelled a long way and have plenty of stories to share.

The Evolution Garden at the Natural History Museum

With Paul Kenrick

Take a walk through Earth’s amazing past. Explore rocks from around Britain, look for fossils and discover how plants and animals have changed over millions of years.

With rock specimens, bronze animal models and planting linked to different periods of Earth’s history, there’s plenty for curious eyes to notice.

All three walks take place on Sunday 8 November 2026.
