Our second Rockwatch visit to Folkestone this year proved to be another huge success, with glorious sunshine, fascinating discoveries and plenty of smiles throughout the day.
Led by the ever-enthusiastic Steve Friedrich, our young geologists and their families spent the day exploring one of the UK’s most exciting dinosaur footprint locations. Conditions couldn’t have been better, with clear skies and excellent visibility helping everyone spot the remarkable footprints preserved in the rocks along the shoreline.
As we followed the coast, Steve shared the story of how these ancient tracks were formed millions of years ago, bringing to life a landscape once walked by dinosaurs. Seeing the footprints for themselves was a real highlight for many participants and sparked plenty of questions from our budding geologists.
The beach also delivered some fantastic fossil finds. Everywhere we looked there were clues to Folkestone’s ancient past, and it wasn’t long before pockets and collecting bags began filling with geological treasures. Whether it was a first fossil discovery or another addition to an already impressive collection, there was a real sense of excitement and achievement throughout the day.
A special thank you also goes to Steve’s wife, Vicky, who kindly documented the event and captured many wonderful photographs of the day’s activities. We’re delighted to be able to share some of these moments with you.
In the afternoon, the adventure continued at the Folkestone Museum where curator Corrie Clover led a series of engaging workshops. Through hands-on activities, specimens and discussions, Rockwatchers were able to build on what they had seen on the beach and deepen their understanding of the area’s geology and fossil heritage.
One of the joys of Rockwatch events is seeing children and adults learning together, asking questions, sharing discoveries and developing a deeper appreciation for the Earth beneath our feet. Folkestone once again delivered all of that and more.
A huge thank you to Steve, Vicky, Corrie and everyone who joined us for making the day such a memorable one. Judging by the enthusiasm on display, there may well be a few future geologists among our group!
We look forward to sharing more adventures with our Rockwatchers soon.
