Looking for something a little different to do during the summer holidays?

We’ve all heard of Stonehenge, but did you know there are many other ancient stone circles waiting to be discovered across the UK? This summer, join Rockwatch as we head north to Cumbria to explore one of these remarkable prehistoric sites. Led by our knowledgeable field trip leader, Audrey Brown, we’ll discover how rocks, landscapes and people came together to create a monument that has stood the test of time.

Hidden amongst peaceful countryside near Orton, the mysterious Gamelands Stone Circle has watched over the landscape for thousands of years. Although the stones no longer stand upright, their impressive oval arrangement can still clearly be seen, offering a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the people who built it so long ago.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the circle is the stone itself. Almost every boulder is made from distinctive pink granite, thought to have originated from the famous Shap granite area nearby. Yet tucked amongst them is a single limestone stone, raising interesting questions about how and why it became part of the monument.

As always with Rockwatch, we’ll look beyond the obvious. We’ll explore how glaciers helped shape the surrounding landscape, why particular rocks may have been chosen and how geology influenced the lives of people living here thousands of years ago.

This is exactly the sort of day Rockwatch does best—combining science, history and outdoor exploration in a relaxed, family-friendly setting. There’ll be plenty to discover, lots of questions to ask and a wonderful opportunity to visit one of Cumbria’s lesser-known prehistoric treasures with our brilliant field trip leader, Audrey Brown.

Whether you’re already fascinated by ancient Britain or simply enjoy spending time outdoors and learning something new together, we’d love you to join us.

Book your place and enjoy another unforgettable Rockwatch summer adventure.
