Rockwatchers enjoyed a fun — if rather windy — afternoon at Bracklesham Bay recently, joining fossil expert David Bone and Rockwatch helper Kate Adler for another memorable fossil-hunting adventure on the Sussex coast. Even Eddie the dog enjoyed it, sporting his warm jacket and Rockwatch badge!
The weather may have kept everyone reaching for extra layers, but experienced fossil hunters know that unsettled conditions can often help uncover fresh material on the beach — and this trip certainly proved the point! As the tide fell, Rockwatch families headed onto the sands in search of Bracklesham’s famous fossils, and there were smiles all round as fossilised sharks teeth and other exciting finds began to appear.
Before the hunt began, David shared examples of local fossils and explained more about the geology of this fascinating stretch of coastline, where rocks from the Eocene Epoch preserve evidence of an ancient warm sea that covered southern England around 45 million years ago.
Bracklesham remains one of Rockwatch’s most popular field trip destinations, and it was wonderful to see so many families braving the weather to discover more about this fossil-rich part of West Sussex.
A huge thank you to David Bone for leading another fantastic trip and sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm throughout the afternoon, and thanks too to Kate Adler for helping support the day. Most of all, thank you to all the Rockwatchers and families who came along and made the trip such fun despite the blustery conditions.
We hope to see you on another Rockwatch adventure very soon!
