Fossilised fragment of a Brachiopod found by Oliver

Fossilised fragment of a Brachiopod found by Oliver

Oliver recently discovered a fossil whilst exploring the Lea Quarry on the Wenlock Edge in Shropshire, which is a popular Rockwatch fieldtrip location and sent this fabulous find in to ask for help in identifying it. We’d love to go back there again with Rockwatchers as soon as it is safe for us to do so!

Already knowledgeable about the local geology of the area and keen to understand what he had found,  Oliver explained, “We have lots of ammonites, gastropods and brachiopods in the quarried stone around here..[and] I think it is a fragment of a fossilised plant”.

So did Oliver find a fossilised plant after all? Rockwatch Ambassador Michael shared his thoughts with Oliver on his discovery and explains why he arrived at a different conclusion. Find out what Oliver’s fabulous find is in the Fossils found by Rockwatchers  section.
