This summer we’re adding another exciting adventure to the Rockwatch calendar! Join our wonderful field trip leader, Audrey Brown, as we head into the beautiful Cumbrian countryside to explore the fascinating Gamelands Stone Circle. Audrey will guide us through the geology, landscape and ancient history of this remarkable site, bringing its stories to life for curious geologists of all ages.

Set amongst rolling farmland between Orton and Raisbeck, Gamelands is a peaceful and atmospheric place where geology and human history come together. Although the stones have long since fallen, their arrangement still reveals the shape of an impressive oval monument built thousands of years ago.

Made up of around forty large boulders, most of the stones are striking pink granite, believed to have been transported from the nearby Shap granite outcrops. Curiously, one stone stands out from the rest as it is made from limestone, offering an interesting talking point about where the builders sourced their materials and why.

As we walk around the site, we’ll look at how the landscape has changed over time, discover why prehistoric communities chose this location and discuss what these remarkable monuments may have been used for. It’s a wonderful opportunity to combine archaeology, local geology and a summer walk through one of England’s most beautiful landscapes.

Whether you’re fascinated by rocks, ancient monuments or simply enjoy exploring somewhere new with your family, this promises to be a memorable day out.

Suitable for curious children and adults alike.

Come along and uncover another chapter in Britain’s remarkable geological and archaeological story with Rockwatch.
