Dig Into Derbyshire’s Deep Past with Rockwatch!

Rockwatch invites young geologists and their families to a truly unique experience on Thursday 21st August 2025 — a Fossils and Minerals Day at the National Stone Centre in Derbyshire!

This educational and fun-packed event is perfect for curious minds eager to explore the story of Derbyshire’s rocks, fossils, and industrial heritage.

We’ll begin with a guided walk along the Geotrail, where you’ll see 330-million-year-old rocks up close and learn what they reveal about ancient marine environments. You’ll then become a fossil detective, examining clues hidden in fossil assemblages, before enjoying a narrow-gauge railway ride through the site of an old limestone mine. From there, we’ll journey into Steeplehouse Quarry, on the hunt for shark teeth and dermal denticles preserved in rock.

After lunch and a scenic walk past historical mining landmarks, we’ll search for beautiful Derbyshire minerals and scale the famous Black Rocks for a panoramic view of the surrounding geology.

Led by geologists Peter Jones, Robin Jeffcoat, and Viv Smith, this hands-on day brings the Peak District’s deep past vividly to life.

Cost: £15 per person (includes all activities: Geotrail, Fossil Detective activity and Light Railway).
