Join us for an unforgettable day of geological exploration in the heart of Derbyshire’s Peak District. From ancient Carboniferous Limestone to dramatic lava flows and the intrigue of a crude oil deposit, this Rockwatch Field Trip promises a fascinating journey through time. Embrace the geological wonders, connect with fellow enthusiasts, and uncover the secrets etched in the rocks beneath our feet.

10:00 AM – Miller’s Dale: Carboniferous Limestone Quarry and Lime Burning Kiln

  • Delve into the secrets of a Carboniferous Limestone quarry
  • Explore the remnants of a lime burning kiln

12:00 PM – Ravens Tor: Carboniferous Limestone, Lava Flow, and Fault

  • Experience the mystique of Ravens Tor
  • Witness the interplay of Carboniferous Limestone with a lava flow and a fault line

1:30 PM – Litton Mill: Carboniferous Limestone and Basalt Lava

  • Immerse yourself in the geological wonders of Litton Mill
  • Observe the coexistence of Carboniferous Limestone and basalt lava

3:00 PM – Mam Tor: Landslip and Millstone Grit

  • Witness a landslip at Mam Tor and the enduring beauty of Millstone Grit formations

4:00 PM – Windy Knoll: Carboniferous and Crude Oil Deposit

  • Conclude our journey at Windy Knoll
  • Explore Carboniferous formations and exposure of a crude oil deposit

Additional Information:

  • Parking: Miller’s Dale Railway Station car park is pay and display; parking elsewhere on the trip is free.
  • Amenities: Toilets and a café available at Miller’s Dale Railway Station.
  • Lunch: Bring a packed lunch.
  • Attire: No hard hats or hi-vis clothing required; wear boots with good ankle support due to uneven terrain.
  • Equipment: Bring hand lenses; hammers are not necessary.
