Join Rockwatch for a fascinating day exploring the dynamic coastline of East Yorkshire, where Ice Age landscapes meet the modern shoreline.
This family-friendly field trip takes us on a gentle walk to the beach, where we’ll uncover clues from the last Ice Age and discover how glaciers shaped the land we see today. Along the way, we’ll investigate layers of clay, sands and ancient wetland deposits that tell the story of a changing environment over thousands of years.
What will we explore?
- Ice Age deposits left behind by vast glaciers
- Evidence of ancient lakes and wetlands
- Pebbles and rocks transported from distant places by ice
- Fossils that have travelled far from their original homes
This is a brilliant opportunity for young geologists to get hands-on with real geological detective work—spotting unusual stones, asking questions, and piecing together Earth’s past.
What to expect
- A walk of around 1km across grassy terrain to the beach
- Sandy shoreline with some pebbly areas
- A relaxed, informal learning experience led by an expert
