Rockwatch is heading back to the spectacular North Yorkshire coast for another unforgettable fossil-hunting adventure in Staithes!

Join us for a hands-on geology field trip led by Professor Kevin G. Taylor, where we’ll explore the fascinating rocks and fossils of the Lower Jurassic coastline. This is a fantastic opportunity for young geologists and families to discover ancient marine environments, search for fossils, and learn how these rocks formed over millions of years.

What We’ll Do

  • Start the day at the harbour’s edge with an introduction to the geology of Staithes and what we might find
  • Walk south along the foreshore to explore the Lower Jurassic mudstones and ironstones of the Cleveland Ironstone Formation
  • Hunt for fossils, including ammonites, belemnites, and trace fossils
  • Discover how these rocks formed and the environmental conditions that shaped them
  • Learn about the origin of the ironstones and their historical importance
  • Keep an eye out for seabirds—and if we’re lucky, seals too!
