Millom Rock Park and Quarry (c) Holcim

Did you know you can stand above the remains of a huge volcano that erupted hundreds of millions of years ago in Cumbria?

Join Rockwatch on Sunday 19 April 2026 for a family geology adventure in Millom, South Cumbria, where we’ll explore ancient seafloors, volcanic rocks and a spectacular quarry view.

Our trip begins at Donkey Rocks, where we’ll uncover clues to a seabed that existed around 420 million years ago. Then we’ll head to Millom Rock Park, a fantastic outdoor geological display overlooking the dramatic Ghyll Scaur Quarry.

Young geologists will get hands-on with giant rock samples from across Cumbria and even collect small volcanic rock specimens to take home.

With plenty of space to explore and lots of amazing geology to discover, this promises to be a brilliant day out for families.
