Footprints in Time: A Fantastic Day with Rockwatch in Folkestone

Dinosaur footprint in Folkestone with RockwatchersOn Saturday 11th April, Rockwatchers headed to the coast for an unforgettable day in Folkestone – and what a way to kick off our first of three planned visits to explore the origins of dinosaur footprints in the sand.

From the moment the day began, there was a real sense of excitement. Families gathered, ready to step back in time and uncover clues from millions of years ago – and they were not disappointed.

Leading the adventure was expert guide Steve Friedrich, whose passion and knowledge brought the landscape to life. As one attendee shared:

“Steve was brilliant – very welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable. The day was paced perfectly.”

Out on the beach, Rockwatchers discovered just how rich this stretch of coastline is. Fossils were everywhere – hidden in plain sight – sparking curiosity and excitement with every find.

“We couldn’t believe the amount of fossils in one area… my son learnt so many new facts.”

The real magic of the day was in those moments of discovery when young geologists connected the dots between the rocks beneath their feet and the dinosaurs that once roamed there. Understanding how footprints were formed in ancient sands and how they’ve been preserved for us to find today turned the beach into a living classroom.

The experience didn’t stop at the shoreline. A visit to the local museum added another layer to the day, with engaging, hands-on activities that got everyone thinking, questioning, and joining in.

“The session at the museum was wonderful… the children were really engaged.”

And perhaps one of the most telling reflections of all:

“What great value for money… it was such a brilliant day.”

Days like this are what Rockwatch is all about—bringing geology to life in a way that’s accessible, exciting, and memorable for the whole family.

A huge thank you to Steve and the brilliant museum team for helping create such a special experience—and to all the Rockwatchers who joined us and made the day so enjoyable.

We left with pockets full of fossils, heads full of new knowledge, and a renewed sense of wonder about the incredible sense of deep time beneath our feet.
