Join us for Fossil Hunting at Bracklesham Bay

If you’ve ever dreamed of finding a fossil shark’s tooth with the sea stretching out in front of you, Bracklesham Bay is the place to do it — and this May, Rockwatch is heading back.

On Saturday 16th May 2026, join fossil experts David and Anne Bone for a relaxed but thrilling afternoon exploring one of southern England’s most productive fossil beaches. Bracklesham’s rocks record a time around 45 million years ago, when this part of West Sussex lay beneath a warm, shallow sea teeming with life.

The trip begins with a friendly show-and-tell, introducing the fossils of the area and what to look out for. As the tide falls, we’ll move onto the beach and search the wet sands, where waves continually reveal fossil shells — and, with luck, the glossy black teeth of ancient sharks.

This trip is ideal for families, with a recommended minimum age of 7, flat walking once on the beach, and no tools required. All collecting is from the surface, making it accessible, safe, and hugely rewarding.

Bracklesham can feel chilly even on sunny days, so warm layers and waterproof footwear are a must. There are toilets and a café nearby, and David will also have copies of his excellent guidebook available at a special Rockwatch price.

Places are limited and Bracklesham trips are always popular — so if fossil hunting by the sea sounds like your perfect Saturday afternoon, don’t miss out.
