The UK's Nationwide Geology Club for Children

Thank You for Joining Us in Staithes!

A huge thank you to all the brilliant Rockwatchers who joined us for our recent field trip to Staithes, North Yorkshire! It was a fantastic day filled with fossil hunting, coastal exploring, and geological discovery.

Special thanks must go to Professor Kevin G. Taylor, who led the trip and shared his incredible knowledge of the Staithes Sandstone Formation and surrounding Jurassic geology. We learned so much about how these ancient rocks formed, the role of storms in shaping sedimentary structures, and how the Cleveland Ironstone Formation tells the story of a very different time in Earth’s history. And of course, many of you made some amazing fossil finds, including ammonites and belemnites!

Staithes is such a special place – not just for its geology, but for its history and natural beauty too.

If you came along, why not write about your experience and enter the Rockstar Young Geologists’ Competition? Whether you want to write a short report, draw what you found, or even create a short film, we’d love to hear about what you learned and what inspired you during the trip.

Thank you again for making the day so enjoyable. We hope you had as much fun as we did, and we can’t wait to see you at another Rockwatch event very soon!
