Have you ever wondered where the stones in your local buildings came from? Or how mountains, volcanoes and landscapes are formed? This summer, Rockwatch is inviting young geologists and their families to discover the answers at our exciting GeoLab event in Stevenage.
Taking place on Wednesday 12 August, GeoLab combines the best parts of hands-on science, geology, exploration and discovery into one fun-filled day.
We’re thrilled to be working alongside our experienced GeoLab leader Nikki Edwards and the GA’s Alex Ayling, who will guide participants through a series of engaging activities inspired by the renowned Earth Science Education Unit workshops.
Throughout the morning, participants will investigate the rock cycle through a range of practical experiments and interactive activities. Rather than simply learning about geology, you’ll be doing geology!
You’ll handle specimens, investigate geological processes and discover how rocks are continuously recycled through Earth’s dynamic systems. Local geological examples will help bring these concepts to life, making connections between global geological processes and the local geology of Stevenage.
After lunch, we’ll explore the geology of Stevenage from a completely different perspective.
With thanks to the team at the Stevenage Museum, we’ll discover the fascinating geology wall and learn more about the rocks that tell the story of the local area. We’ll then head out on a guided building stones walk through the town centre, uncovering geological clues hidden within familiar buildings and streets.
By the end of the day, you’ll have a whole new appreciation for the geology all around you.
Whether you’re a budding geologist or simply curious about the world, GeoLab is a fantastic way to spend a summer holiday day with Rockwatch.
We can’t wait to see you there!
A huge thank you to Nikki Edwards, Alex Ayling, and the team at Stevenage Museum for helping make this event possible.
