Bracklesham BayJoin us on our Rockwatch field trip to West Sussex for a spot of Building Stones Geodetective work at the historic Boxgrove Priory, near Chichester, West Sussex, followed by a fossil hunt on Bracklesham beach. The field trip is from 1.00pm til 6.00pm on Saturday 30 September.

The trip with be led by David Bone.

Part One: Become a Geodetective

Wearing your geodetective hat, you’ll explore the building stones of the building stones of the Priory church and buildings. David has set a fun quiz which will be sent to you before the trip. You will need to print that out and bring it with you, plus a pen/pencil. And like all good geodetectives, remember to bring your hand lens or magnifier card.

Meet 1.00pm at Boxgrove Priory, just east of Chichester. Post code PO18 0EE. Grid reference SU 9082 0751. If the Priory car park is full, there is an alternative car park nearby, by the Village Hall.

Part Two: Fossil Hunt at the Beach and Show and Tell

At the end of the church visit we will drive to Bracklesham seafront car park (Pay & Display) for a tea break and toilets. Billy’s cafe on the beach is the place to head for, on the edge of the car park, but it can be busy. Bracklesham Lane, East Wittering, Chichester. Post Code: PO20 8HJ. Grid Reference SZ 8049 9636

At 4.00p.m. David will do a “show & tell” of Bracklesham fossils then, as the tide goes out, we will head for the beach to begin our search on the wet sands for fossils – Eocene age fossil shells and, hopefully, sharks teeth. We aim to finish at low tide about 6.00p.m. although you are free to stay longer should you wish. Remember to bring small containers or small plastic bags for your fossil finds.

David Bone will have copies of his book “The Geology and Fossils of Bracklesham and Selsey” for a special discount price of £3, cash only on the day. Worth every penny!

Rockwatch Does Things Safely

We suggest you may wish to have lunch before the trip starts – picnic or local cafes.
