The Bicentenary of William Smith’s Geological Map
The Yorkshire Museum, Museum Gardens, York YO1 7FR
Exhibition extended to 22 April 2016.
The William Smith map that changed the world is on show to mark 200 years since its creation. It changed the way people thought about what was beneath their feet and went on to inspire scientists to work out a more accurate age of the planet. The display looks at the eventful life of “Strata” Smith who saw his work plagiarised and him being sent to a debtors prison before he finally became regarded as the father of English Geology. There are also other maps and books as well as items from his fossil collection.
Open daily 10.00 – 5.00pm
