Location: East Bracklesham Drive, Bracklesham, West Sussex

Join Rockwatch for an exciting afternoon fossil hunt at Bracklesham Bay, one of the UK’s most famous fossil-collecting beaches. Led by expert local fossil experts David and Anne Bone, this trip is perfectly timed with the falling tide and offers a fantastic opportunity to find Eocene-age fossil shells and sharks’ teeth.

What to Expect

We’ll begin with a “show and tell” session, where David and Anne will introduce the local geology and fossils you might find. We’ll then head down onto the beach to search the wet sands as the tide falls, finishing around low tide depending on weather and collecting conditions.

Accessibility & Terrain

  • Access to the beach is via loose gravel
  • Once on the beach, walking is flat and easy

Facilities

  • Public toilets in the car park
  • Adjacent café (The Beach) — can be very busy so bring a picnic if you prefer

What to Bring

  • Warm, windproof clothing (the site is very exposed)
  • Footwear that can get wet
  • Small bags or containers for fossil finds
  • NO hammers or hard hats required — collecting is from the beach surface only

Additional Information

David’s popular guide The Geology and Fossils of Bracklesham and Selsey will be available on the day for £4.00 (normally £4.50). Cash preferred.

Please note: Rockwatch field trips are for Rockwatch members and accompanying parent/guardian only.

Bookings

Children must be accompanied by an adult so please buy tickets for children and accompanying adult/s.
