Millom Rock Park and Quarry (c) Holcim

Get ready to travel back hundreds of millions of years on a Rockwatch adventure to the North West geology of South Cumbria! This family-friendly field trip explores ancient seafloors, volcanic rocks and one of the most fascinating geological sites in the region.

We’ll begin our day at Donkey Rocks, which reveal the remains of a seabed that formed around 420 million years ago. It’s not quite what you might imagine an ancient ocean floor to look like, and our Rockwatch leader will help you discover the clues hidden in the rocks.

Afterwards we’ll take a short drive to Millom Rock Park, a unique outdoor geological display overlooking a spectacular working quarry. Here enormous rock samples from across Cumbria are displayed along “Rock Street”, each telling a different part of the story of how the landscape of the Lake District was created.

From the viewing point you can look down into Ghyll Scaur Quarry, where rock formed inside a huge volcano around 450 million years ago. It’s a fantastic place to see geology in action while learning how volcanic rocks are used today to build roads and runways.

Young geologists will also have the chance to collect small samples of volcanic rock to take home, and complete a Rockwatch worksheet while exploring the site.

This is a brilliant trip for curious young explorers with plenty of space to move around, lots of rocks to touch, and some truly epic geological stories to uncover.
