Ashover and the National Stone Centre
Rockwatch is heading to Derbyshire for a two-day geological adventure.

On Saturday Ian Sutton, a local expert, will take us to explore the Carboniferous Limestone of the Ashover area where you can do some fossil and mineral hunting.  Then you become a geo-detective and work out the depositional environment of the region!

On Sunday we are heading to the National Stone Centre at Wirksworth.  It’s a 40 acre site with amazing geological formations and indoor and outdoor activities.  You’ll be going on a geo-trail through the disused limestone quarries whose rocks once formed part of a tropical island with shallow lagoons, barrier reefs and white sand beaches.  These rocks are packed with fossils including corals, brachiopods and crinoids.  And you’ll be looking at the Millennium Wall – an outdoor museum of British traditional dry stone walling.  It has nineteen different sections showing traditional styles and materials from all over the country.  There is a separate entrance fee for the National Stone Centre.

The Mount Cook Adventure Centre is the perfect place to stay on Saturday night as it’s near both of the sites we’ll be visiting.  It’s a centre used by groups and schools so we have to book for groups of 8 – even though you will be given separate family rooms.  Each room sleeps up to 4 and is £30 + VAT per person per night.
Email if you would like to stay there and we will book the centre in batches of 8. Contact Geraldine at hello@rockwatch.org.uk

This weekend will be a fabulous exploration of Derbyshire and if you can’t come for both days just book and email to let us know which day you’d like to attend.
